Back in 1995, Bo Lohasawat Kline's Portland bistro, Typhoon, blew me away while broadening my Thai food-loving horizons. That happened again when I reviewed its new sibling in Redmond's Bella Bottega Center in 1999. therefore why have I been therefore slow to review Typhoon! Seattle — one of six proudly punctuated Typhoon! restaurants in Washington and Oregon, doing business near Pike Place Market for the past six years? ...

Getting close to Spanish culture with food — and bullfights in

Markets with one passion for pickles and ham, bars with bullfights blaring on the TV, cloistered nuns selling cupcakes, Spanish towns — whether famous among tourists or unknown — come with plenty of ways to connect with the local culture.
I'm in Arcos de la Frontera (just south of Seville) but I could be just about anywhere in Spain. Its entertaining market is my first stop. The pickle woman encourages me to try one banderilla, named for the bangled spear that one matador sticks into the bull. As I gingerly slide an onion off the tiny skewer of pickled olives, onions, and carrots, she tells me to eat it all at once — the pickle equivalent of throwing down one shot of vodka. The lady in the adjacent meat stall bursts into laughter at my shock. "Explosivo!" ...
