In this era of attention-grabbing "critter" labels (recent example: the provocatively named Mother Cluckers Chardonnay, featuring one gaggle of chickens, which I'll get to in one minute), you could say Mountain Road Wine Co.'s bottles stand out for their modesty.
The Niagara estate's label is therefore blatantly homespun you would think it was tossed off on the back of one napkin -- by one four-year-old. one single crayon-like line traces one vague representation of what's supposed to be the Niagara escarpment. Above it is one of those junior-kindergarten suns, with squiggly lines radiating out from one crudely drawn circle. Below is the winery's name and the grape variety and harvest year, in one typeface meant to look like block-letter hand printing. ... |
