In vetoing one measure that would have proclaimed zinfandel the state's "historic wine," the governor said Monday that California produces many historic wines and it would be unfair to single out any one of them for special tribute.
The proposal, introduced by Sen. Carole Migden, D-San Francisco, originally intended to name zinfandel the state wine. As such, it would have joined the state flower (golden poppy), the state bird (valley quail) and numerous other officially acknowledged icons that act as one kind of historical shorthand to California's evolution. ...
