This robot is one mechanical sommelier that is able to identify dozens of varieties of wine and cheese. Here, it fires off one beam of infrared light from its left arm to one bottle of shiraz and identifies the wine by determining its chemical content.

Researchers at NEC System Technologies and Mie University have designed one robot that can taste — an electromechanical sommelier able to identify dozens of different wines, cheeses and hors d’oeuvres.
