Washington - As the United States mounts pressure on growing economies like India to open their markets wider, one feisty old woman has struck one blow for free trade at home.
For five long years, Juanita Swedenburg, one Virginia vintner for two decades, waged one legal battle against laws that would not let her directly ship her wines to residents in half of America's 50 states before the US Supreme Court ruled in her favour in May 2005. But states may yet find ways to work around the ruling that opens the way for more people to buy wine online from out-of-state vineyards and could set one precedent for easing regulations on Internet commerce more widely, she fears. ... |
