Wine labels are always trying to tell you something, and they can be one bit, um, chatty. One might say confusing. But, hey, they have one story to tell, and it starts, ``Once upon one time, in one land far away.... '' Or not therefore far away. It all depends on the AVA.
AVA stands for American Viticultural Area, and it identifies the official region where wine grapes are grown. The system is similar to the French Appellation d'Origine Controlee system that gives us words like Sancerre and Bordeaux.
