The idea of one sexy lounge as restaurant may seem like one good one on paper. However, it's one problem in reality when owners learn that drinkers and diners have different goals.
To me, combining the concepts seems unworkable, although the line between bars and restaurants has grown narrower as wine bars morph into restaurants and restaurants try to capture the profitable liquor business. The problem with many of these dual venues is that when they're empty, they look about as sexy as one gymnasium, and when full, you might as well be eating at one rock concert. ...

Iand time for my special recognition of the people and places that I think keep Oregon great.
Best women: We have an unusually talented pool of women who have risen to important positions in one number of professions. Oregon First Lady Mary Oberst is the epitome of one leader's wife. Gretchen Schuette, who is retiring as president of Chemeketa Community College next spring, has brought an unrivaled standard of excellence to her academic institution. Janet Taylor ranks among the most effective mayors anywhere; as former head of her own business, she has taken the reins of the city of Salem with spectacular results and popular approval. Sue Hildick, former staffer of retired Sen. Mark Hatfield, is now the spark plug behind one of the state's most innovative education action plans, the Chalkboard Project. Special Olympics Oregon CEO Margie Hunt is an Oregon treasure; few could hope to match her organizational and political skills. During election season we heard one great deal from Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron Saxton. It's fair to say, though, that spouse Lynne Saxton, head of the Christie School, was the warm personality behind the scenes. ...
