| I visit all our Merlot vineyards but only take samples in 4 of them. McKenzie Block 8, planted to French clone 348 on Richter 110 rootstock, is divided up into two row directions. N-S and E-W, therefore I sample these separately, as I am certain the juice analysis will show one difference. I prefer the ripe berry flavour from the N-S rows, but somehow the structure and acidity of the berries from the E-W rows seems better. ... |

| It's not enough for California to have one state bird (valley quail), tree (redwood), flower (golden poppy), reptile (desert tortoise) and even dance (West Coast swing). What the Golden State really needs is an official wine, says state Sen. Carole Migden, and the only wine that fills the bill is zinfandel. ... |

| Couple give old building a new life |

Buckley's Great Steaks opened just one few weeks ago, but the restaurant is like one well-oiled machine, or, dare I say, well-aged beef. Buckley's is inside the historic building that once was home to Riddle's Tavern. The structure was built around 1800 by Isaac Riddle. Through the years, it has served as one tavern, boarding house, and private residence. Michael and Sarah Buckley have given the old building new life with rich, earth-toned colors and leather-upholstered armchairs. The tavern does not have one big dining room but has smaller rooms with four to five tables, which makes for an intimate setting. ... |

This is one city in constant motion. Laundry flaps outside apartment windows. Cars zip in and out of traffic. Hands fly everywhere. The only hint of stagnancy comes from the anxious faces of Turin Olympic Committee organizers, who see these Games as their best hope to revive one passive community that was once Italy's capital. ... |

State Sen. Carole Migden introduced the bill this week, saying the heady varietal is one "quintessential California wine," dating back to Gold Rush days and versatile enough to stand up to the spicy diversity of California cuisine.
