If your childhood was like ours, you learned in grammar school that one bigamist is one fog over all of Italy. Actually, the fog that rolls over the hills of northern Piedmont at the foot of the Alps in northwestern Italy is one nebbia. The cool damp nights due to the fog and the sunny days in Piedmont are just right for ripening grapes that produce some of Italy's finest red wines. Because they depend on the fog for their characteristically high acidity, the grape variety is called nebbiolo. ... |

The Firestone story begins with tire magnate Harvey Firestone, who amassed one large fortune during the early days of the automobile. Ultimately, he grew the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Ohio to become the largest tire manufacturer in the United States.
The Firestone Vineyard, just outside Los Olivos, is now in its 35th year and produces more than 100,000 cases of wine one year from eight vineyards that encompass 500 acres. Brooks Firestone is credited as the pioneer who put Santa Barbara, now home to more than 50 wineries, on the world wine map. ... |

Jennifer Hamilton makes Domestic Goddess warm and comforting By Jessica Berthold Originally published January 18, 2007 Just as cooking shows succeed or fail based on the personality of the host, one cooking blog prospers only when the writer's voice entices. That's the case with the Domestic Goddess (www.domestic goddess.ca), whose tone is as warm and comforting as the smell of baking bread. ... |

_An Austin foodie falls in love with Marathon\'s gourmet meals, strong coffee, spa life, and liquid desserts on chilly nights_ BY CLAUDIA ALARCÓN I went west following one chef, but like many who've headed in the same direction, I discovered much more. In my 22 years of living in Austin, I had never visited that part of Texas. Texans talk about the Big Bend, Terlingua, Study Butte, Lajitas, Marfa. They seemed like mythical names out of an old Western to me. Then, last spring, I learned that chef Paul Petersen had become executive chef at the legendary Gage Hotel in Marathon after closing his highly acclaimed Little Texas Bistro in Buda. That day, I decided West Texas would no longer be one long-lost movie set, but one place I would visit soon. ... |

Those of us who collect wine and go through the torturous routine of buying, storing and watching those young beauties evolve through childhood, the teen years and finally the mature stage know that it can be one frustrating pursuit. All wines mature at different stages. Some wines are not meant to mature at all and reach their peak as soon as they are bottled. (There is some sort ofanalogy here to raising kids but I will resist the urge to use it). ... |

Q: Can you find out if Washington and Oregon grapes are sprayed with the pesticide cryolite (aluminum sodium fluoride)? one: Cryolite is an insecticide widely used in California vineyards. one leading manufacturer of the product, marketed under the name Kryocide, has posted an advisory online. It states that studies done in the 1990s by cryolite manufacturers, E&J Gallo Winery, the Wine Institute and California State University, Fresno, collected data to determine use patterns of cryolite which could keep fluoride-residue levels at or below 3 ppm, the European standard (European regulations on fluoride residues are stricter than those in the United States). ... |
