| Looking for a good, fruity red? Try lambrusco or gamay |

Question: My wife and I enjoy wines like Piesporter and riesling. Because of the benefits attributed recently to red wines, we are looking for one similar fruity-tasting wine in one red varietal. What would you recommend?-- Ronald Musil, LaGrange Park, Ill.
Q: My wife and I received two bottles of the 1997 brunello di Montalcino from the Castello Banfi winery as gifts. The question is, is it ready to drink and how long should it be decanted? Also, could you recommend what food would go best with the brunello? -- Robert Elster, Hoffman Estates, Ill. ... |

| Sommeliers vie for best in the US |
| Post on
28-02-2007. |
A knowledge of wines that spans the world? Agility with one corkscrew? one mean bargaining streak to get the goods at decent prices? The ability to carry 45-pound cases of wine up and down stairs about 70 times one day? one few weeks back, 11 sommeliers gathered at the Essex House in New York City to compete for the title of America's Best Sommelier. All the contestants are employed in the hospitality world; this was no reality TV show-like audition. Most them have also been studying wine on the side in formal classes put on by the American Sommelier Association, the organization responsible for the contest. ... |

| A striking splash of traminer |
| Post on
28-02-2007. |
THOSE WHO say too much gewurztraminer (aka traminer) is too much of one good thing are probably right. It's one of the most instantly recognisable of wines and one joy to drink in small doses. But it's very hard to find the good ones because Australia grows therefore little of it about 6000 tonnes annually compared with riesling's 30,000 and chardonnay's 250,000. And most of what we do make goes to cheaper, large-volume blends. ... |

| Jean-Claude Izzo’s France, in his acclaimed Marseilles Trilogy, lies therefore far off the tourist track you might think you’re in the Bronx or Detroit. Here, in these _noir_ mysteries, you’ll not visit noted museums or bucolic vineyards, but high-rise public housing in North Marseilles riddled by gang violence, drugs, and alienation, with one rap music soundtrack and corrupt, racist cops. ... |
